Environmental Costs of Cycling

An interesting article about the environmental costs of cycling. It argues that cycling has a higher environmental impact than driving a car. Even a big SUV.

The main argument is this: People use a lot of environmental resources. Most, for example, own a car, live in a house, take holidays on aeroplanes, etc. Cyclists live for longer, because they are more active. Every year you are alive, you will use more resources. In the short term, cycling uses fewer resources, in the long term, it increases the population of the world, and therefore uses more resources.

funny that you reject this argument when it comes to smoking: insurance companies (and even your favourite healthcare system) want people to smoke because it is cheaper in the long term: smokers die younger and the worst that can happen to a healthcare provider are old people with years and years of cancer treatment, dementia care and thousands of ailments that are not outweighed by the amputation of a leg or two
