About the Book

This book tries to do exactly what it says on the cover. That is to help you learn about research methods and statistics, in order to have success in your psychology degree. We know that students don't think research methods and statistics are the best thing about doing psychology; and we know that you don't read books on statistics for fun. But books on statistics too often read as if you are reading them for the pure joy of it. But when this book was put together, we knew that wasn't the case - we knew that you would read it to because you wanted to pass that module.
The most common way of being assessed in research methods and statistics is with a practical report. So that is where we start - with a practical report - we don't tuck it away at the back of the book in an appendix. And we try to keep sight of the assessment all the way through the book.
The book is not full of numbers, equations or arithmetic. First, because you have probably got a computer which knows the sums and does the sums for you, and second, if you haven't got a computer, you will have been either given a handout, or will have a book that tells you how to do the sums. They aren't the hard bit. The hard bit is understanding why you need to do them. (Actually, it is persuading your tutors that you understand why you need to do them. Usually, but not quite always, the same thing.)
The contents look like this:
  • Introduction (includes study tips and practical resort writing).
  • Chapter 1: The role of theory in psychology
  • Chapter 2: Collecting Data: experimental design
  • Chapter 3: Non-experimental designs
  • Chapter 4: Measurement in psychology
  • Chapter 5: Issues in psychological research (sampling and ethics)
  • Chapter 6: Descriptive statistics
  • Chapter 7: What are inferential statistics?
  • Chapter 8: Using inferential statistics
  • Further Reading
And all for less than a tenner!
